Hi I'm Joseph Thorin

About Me

I was born and raised in the midwest, and will always have an affinity for the flat lands. I am currently attending college and am newly married. My beautiful wife is also a midwesterner. I enjoy photography and the arts. I also like to go hiking and mountain climbing — that is how I like to relax.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon because I have personally received a witness in my heart that God lives and has given us his purest teachings through this church. Growing up, I had many friends who went to many different churches and we would sometimes talk of religion. When asked why they belonged to their respective faiths, they would often say it was what their parents believed, and so did they. I can't say that as a youngster, my answer was much different. But my parents, though teaching me correct principles in my youth, always asserted that I must know for myself if being a Mormon was really correct. And I came to know. Because of questions I have asked and experiences I have had in private, I can say with no doubt in my heart that I know that the this religion is truly given of God. I know that God lives and loves us too, and that he knows our situation here on Earth, that there are so may conflicts and obscurities concerning the teachings of God, God's teachings, and God himself. He knows it and has reached out to help us find the truth. I have prayed to God and have felt his presence so near at times. There have been miracles in my life, real miracles, and they have come through my faith in Christ, the living Son of God. His life was so pure, and his teachings so clear, if we are willing to really listen with ears that can hear, and read with eyes that can see. My convictions are strong, and the fruit of my life's decisions are evidence to those around me that what I have is real. The best part is, you can have it too. Just as I was given the choice to know for myself, you have that same choice. All of us do. God will tell you when you're looking in the right place. Just listen, read. Read the Book of Mormon as I have done and you too will know that God lives and has truly given us the fulness of his teachings, the Gospel, once again. Just thinking about it makes me excited — go and find out! I testify that it is true.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by visiting other people in my neighborhood and sharing with them different things I have learned while reading the scriptures. I have also spent a lot of time teaching religious classes to others in my area so that we can all know more about God and His purpose for our lives. I have found though, that as the teacher, I seem to learn more from my friends in class than they probably learn from me! I also speak fluent Mandarin Chinese, so I especially like to make friends with the Chinese and Taiwanese people in my neighborhood so that I can visit with them too.

In whom should we have faith?

Joseph Thorin
We should have faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who paid for our sins and conquered death. His is the only name in Heaven or on Earth that can save us. To have faith in any other person or thing would be in vain. Because Jesus lives, His power and influence can be felt in our lives if we will have faith in him. As you study the scriptures, you will find that the natural actions that true faith brings about in our lives come s in the form of obedience to him and his teachings. This includes his command to repent and be baptized. You will see miracles as you put your faith in Christ. Show more Show less

Who was Joseph Smith?

Joseph Thorin
Joseph Smith was a young man from New York who found himself in a position that we all do at some point in our lives. He was faced with the question of which church to align himself with, but he wasn't sure which one was God's true church upon the Earth. So, he read the scriptures and sought God's help on the matter After all, if God required him to be baptized, he wanted to be baptized into the church that would allow him to go to Heaven. He read James 1:5 in the Bible which said that if a man lacked wisdom, such as Joseph Smith lacked, then that person should ask God, who would tell that man. So on a Spring morning in 1820, Joseph Smith went into a grove of trees to pray. His life would never be the same. We believe that Joseph Smith was called by God to be a prophet, just as there had been in ancient days to lead people back to God's true teachings, and that through him the church was organized with all of God's purest teachings intact. What do Mormons believe about the Bible? Do they regard it as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

Joseph Thorin
We certainly do! We believe that when God's prophets and servants have been commanded to write their experiences and revelations, those writings are the word of God. Moses wrote, Isaiah wrote, the Apostles wrote and their writings are what mostly compose the whole of the Bible. We also believe that there are many others who have been called of God to lead and teach the people God's truths. Many of their teachings are lost and we have no record of them. Yet there are others whose writings have been lost for centuries, only to be revealed again. Such is the case with the Book of Mormon. As with the Bible, it teaches that Jesus Christ is our savior and redeemer. But its writers were ancient prophets not from the Holy Land, but from the Americas. We believe this book is like the Bible, in that it is Holy Scripture and the word of God. It does not, however, replace the Bible. Show more Show less
