Hi I'm Mikayla

I'm an avid reader. I love my family. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Hey there! I'm Mikayla. I'm currently taking a break from college life to serve as a Mormon missionary. I love to sing- it is one of the things that brings me the most happiness in life. Reading is one of my favorite hobbies and I have a special passion for children's literature. I come from a big family by today's standards; I have 7 brothers and sisters, and they are my best friends. My family has continued to grow with the marriages of my older siblings and the births of 4 nieces. I like to cook, play racquetball and lacrosse, watch all kinds of sports, and play card and board games with my siblings. My dream job is wife and mom, and I would also love to teach kindergarten and write children's books.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I know that I have a Heavenly Father who loves me and wants to bless me by giving me the opportunity to return to live with him. If I follow his commandments here on this earth, I can have that opportunity someday!

How I live my faith

I live my faith not only by attending meetings every Sunday, but also by upholding high standards of integrity. I have made promises to my Heavenly Father to follow the example of his Son Jesus Christ. I am not perfect as He was, but I try to serve others and become more like Him. I visit with other women in my congregation to ensure that they are doing well and that their needs are being met. I also study the scriptures daily and seek for God's will in my life. Serving as a missionary means following Christ's example not only by teaching the Gospel, but also by serving Heavenly Father's children.

What is the Relief Society?

Mikayla
The Relief Society is Heavenly Father's organization for his daughters here on earth. It allows women to come together and strengthen one another by serving each other and all those who are in need. Show more Show less

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

Mikayla
Yes! Just as in times past, Heavenly Father has called a prophet. Our Heavenly Father loves us just as He has loved His children throughout the ages, and He has called a prophet to guide us and help us understand His plan for us. Joseph Smith was the first prophet called after the death of the twelve apostles that Christ called. Through the years, he has been succeeded by other men called of God to lead the church. The living prophet today is Thomas S. Monson. Show more Show less

Can you tell me about Mormon customs: how you dress for church, what holidays you celebrate, etc.?

Mikayla
At church we dress in "Sunday best" to show reverence and respect for our Heavenly Father and for the sacrament, which could be regarded as the Latter-Day Saint "communion." This would include suits and ties for men and boys and skirts and dresses for women and girls. We celebrate Christmas and Easter because of our focus on Jesus Christ as our Savior and Redeemer. We also celebrate national holidays and other personal occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. Show more Show less

What is a ward/stake/branch?

Mikayla
The terms "ward," "stake," and "branch," refer to the way that our church is organized. Wards and branches are local congregations and they are organized geographically, so church members who live in the same area attend the same congregation. Several wards and/or branches combine to make stakes. The term "stake" comes from the Old Testament imagery in which a tent is held up by supporting stakes. We organize and meet in wards, branches and stakes to allow for greater fellowship and service of the members for each other. Show more Show less

What is being a Mormon like?

Mikayla
I think being Mormon is a lot like being just like other people. We enjoy a lot of the same hobbies, like sports, music, reading, etc. We attend schools, go to college, have friends, and join community organizations. On the other hand, being a Mormon is really very different from the life other people lead. We dedicate a lot of time to things some people may not think too much about, like scripture study, church attendance, prayer, and service in our congregation and community. We also avoid things that we have been taught will be detrimental to us, like drugs and alcohol. Probably the biggest distinction that you will see between Mormons and many other people is that we are generally very happy people, even when we are facing major trials. Show more Show less
