Hi I'm Gary

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am 56 years old. I was born in Salt Lake City and lived there for most of 45 years. When I was young I loved to play basketball and that was about all i did. During high school I played for the school team and had the best time ever. When I turned 19 I served two years on a mission for my church to Sapporo Japan. After returning from Japan I met my wife Bev and we were married in 1977. We have three fantastic children and 11 grandchildren. I love my children and in-laws but the grandchildren are the best. Bev and I love to spoil them every chance we get. Eleven years ago Bev and I moved to San Diego, California to work for a new company called Helix Electric. Our children were older and we were quickly becoming empty nesters. I am a Project Manager in the electrical construction buisness. This is a great job as I manage new buildings electrical requirements from start to finish. This great job allowed us to live in San Diego for six years. When the company decided to open the Arizona office they asked me if I wanted to move here and manage the office. I agreed and now I am VP of Operations for Arizona and we have lived here for 5 years. The best part of living here has been the ability of two of our children to move here with their families. Unlike San Diego we now have children and grandchildren living close by that we can see often. We still have our oldest son and his family living in Salt Lake City. So here we are in Mesa living on a golf course in a great house.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because i know that God lives and Jesus is my Savior. I always wanted to be married to a Mormon girl and raise our family in the Mormon way. That way is making families our highest priority. Because I love my family I want to be with them forever not just during this life. I belief that there is life after death and want to spend forever with my family. As we have learned more about the Jesus Christ we have wanted to follow Him and do what He asks. This means that we go to church as a family, read the scriptures together as a family and also pray together often. Everything we do we try to do as a family. That is the reason I love the Mormon Church, when they say we are a family centered church they really mean it. When I do the things as a family I feel something special deep inside me. I have learned that it is the Spirit of Christ sometimes called the Holy Ghost. That is such a good feeling I try to have the same feeling as often as I can. As a Mormon I get to do things and meet with wonderful people that help me to feel the Holy Ghost often. When I do not do what I know is right or what I learn at church or what I know Jesus wants me to do then I don't have the special feeling. So I have learned that if I have the Holy Ghost with me I make better decision and I am happier. Sometimes I make mistakes because I am not perfect but when that happens the Church teaches a way that through repentance I can be forgiven and once again have the kind of happiness that I need and look for. So being a Mormon is what I am because it makes me happy. I also know that it is what Jesus wants me to do, it is His church and the teachings are His. I know that only by keeping the commandments and trying to be like Jesus can I have eternal happiness. He is my Savior and loves me. Also my Heavenly Father lives, loves me and knows me. He answers my prayers. This knowledge along with my faith is the greatest influence on what I am and what I do.

How I live my faith

Throughout my life I have always been active in church and community. I coached my sons in baseball, basketball and football. I tried to also participate in the total sports program coaching and helping organize the different sports. As a family we spent many saturday mornings setting up football fields or setting up consessions for our local little league football. It was always fun to meet new people and get to know them. I also have served in The Mormon Church through out my life. I have taught classes, been involved in scouting and young men activities. Currently I am the Bishop of the Mtn. Ridge Ward. This means I have responsibilities for a large geographic area of Mesa. This has provided oppotunities to meet and help member of the church and also those not of our church. As a Bishop I am involved with the entire function of the church in this area. That means I get to meet with and talk to many people here and see how they also are committed to follow the example of Jesus Christ. Our Ward has almost 500 members, our weekly meetings on sunday have 250 to 300 attend and we try to make the meeting worthwhile and spiritual. We also have time to meet and greet with all our neighbors and friends. Being a Bishop requires spending a lot of time doing things for the church but the blessings are great and well worth the time.
