Hi I'm Iris

Hi! I am a Mom, an Artist, a Gardener, a Teacher, and YES, I'm a Mormon too!

About Me

I am a mom of two boys at home and one grown-up daughter, but I am also going to school(again) and working. I work part time at an elementary school in a small farming community in Eastern Washington. I am a Para Professional and I teach Reading. I love the kids, and I really want to make a difference in their lives. That is why I decided to get a teaching degree, even though I am 52 years old. I have one year of school left, then I hope to be an Elementary School teacher. I have had two other careers already. I was a Landscaper at the Portland International Airport, and I have also done freelance artwork from my own website. I studied Fine Arts at Brigham Young University, and Landscape Technology at Portland Community College. I guess I feel that learning and self-improvement should never stop. I feel like I am learning just as much today as I was when I was 25. I have a strong desire to improve myself every day. I want to be a better mother, wife, teacher, and person. There are too many things I want to do, and not enough time to do it in! Some things I love to do are: reading, painting, doing stuff on my computer, watching movies, fixing up the house, hiking, gardening, enjoying nature, and spending time with my family.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. My parents were farmers. I had 5 older brothers and sisters, who were good examples to me. Though I grew up in this church, I didn't think too much about my membership in it until I went to college. I felt that I needed to know for myself if the church was true. I prayed about it, studied, and felt the Holy Ghost testify to me that it was true. I actually put college aside for a while and went on a mission to share my tesimony with others. This was not an easy thing for me to do. I was a very shy person, and it took a lot of courage for me to go out and talk with strangers, some of whom were hostile. I was glad that I did, though! I became a stronger, better person. My testimony of Jesus Christ was deepened, and now I feel that I have a strong unshakable core of inner strength the helps me through of the difficulties that I have faced, and do now face. I love the savior, and desire to be like him. Every day I ask myself, what have I learned and how can I do better? I feel that I have a purpose for being on this earth. I believe that there is a plan for us all.

How I live my faith

As a member of my church I teach young children the gospel. I have been teaching ages 5 through 9 year-olds for the past 10 years. I care about helping these children build a good foundation for themselves. I want to teach them about the Savior, and how to be like Him-loving and kind. The most amazing thing of all is that by serving voluntarily in the church, I see myself grow just as much as the children do,if not more!
