Hi I'm Melissa

I love being wife and mama in my wonderful family; I also enjoy nutrition research, violin, voice and photography. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in Utah and studied music at BYU. During those years my husband and I met on an orchestra tour to Russia. He plays Bass and I play Violin and he's been my best friend ever since. We have three cute, energetic and happy children. I love being "mama" and learning, working and playing with my children every day. After finishing at BYU, I changed fields and completed a master's degree in public health and a PhD in Nutrition Epidemiology. To keep my skills and continue being of service, I do nutrition research in the wee hours of the morning. I'm helping develop tools for measuring and reducing international food insecurity. I feel strongly about what I do and hope it can make life easier for those who live in the developing world. There are never enough hours in the day, but I still love playing my violin and have enjoyed teaching violin to others and my own children. I am thrilled when we make music as a family. I also love singing, photography, running, cooking, and being outdoors. My husband is a psychiatrist now, but I love talking to him anyway!

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up Mormon, but still had to learn for myself that this church is true. That's probably my favorite part of the gospel. We are taught that every individual is responsible to communicate with God, to get in touch with Him and learn to hear His voice, which is the Holy Spirit. My witness of this church comes from that relationship. When I was in High School and felt like my life was a mess, I turned to God in prayer and began to find direction and hope. On my mission, sometimes the people we tried to teach would bash my beliefs and jar my spirits; but I would return home, and read the Book of Mormon, study and pray and find my faith rekindled and my spirit reassured. I love the peace that the gospel of Jesus Christ brings into my life and my family. I love the commandments, because they keep me safe from addictions, deception and guilt. I love both the Bible and the Book of Mormon because they teach my about Jesus Christ and how to follow His plan. I love knowing God is my Father because it gives me a sense of identity and a glimpse of my potential, as well as the potential of all people. I know as we follow Jesus Christ we will be made into new and better people and blessed with an abundance of happiness.

How I live my faith

I plan and direct the music for our main Sunday Service called "Sacrament Meeting" each week, as well as other events. I also love to participate in "visiting teaching" which is an opportunity to get to know and watch over other women from the congregation. I visit their homes monthly and share a spiritual message and look for ways I can serve them and make their lives easier. Some of my best (and unlikeliest) friendships have come out of these visits! In the past I have taught music to children, taught the gospel to youth, directed girls camps, and helped organize visiting teaching assignments.
