Hi I'm Russell

I was born and raised in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. I am a lawyer, a father, a grandfather and a Mormon.

About Me

I work long hours, supervising a team of lawyers in multiple offices and working on the administration of the business. In my spare time, I relax by watching TV (e.g. Rugby League, cricket, documentaries) or by working on my fairly basic vegetable garden. I play Futsal with my sons on our own team once a week. I am a director of my local Chamber of Commerce. I am separated from my wife, which of course presents challenges, but my faith helps me.

Why I am a Mormon

There are so many reasons why I am a Mormon. It is impossible to condense a lifetime of experiences into a few words, but I'll try to give just a few reasons. I believe in Jesus Christ. He promised "ask, and ye shall receive" (John 16:24). I believe that that means that God will reveal truth to each person who asks in faith. He has done that for me, as He will for you. I have learned for myself that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the way that God has prepared for teaching His children the way to Eternal Life. The New Testament says that "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1). I therefore believe it is fair enough to ask what evidence there is to support my faith. As a lawyer, I work with concepts of "proof on the balance of probabilities" and "proof beyond reasonable doubt." It is therefore important to me to know that three men, whose testimony is published in every copy of the Book of Mormon, solemnly declared that an angel of God showed them the golden plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated. In addition, eight other men declared that Joseph Smith showed them the golden plates and the ancient writings on them. Such an abundance of direct personal testimony provides a solid foundation for believing that testimony beyond reasonable doubt. If I had a court case in which eleven men corroborated the testimony of a witness, I would expect to win that court case on the basis of proof beyond reasonable doubt. In addition to spiritual evidences, these are not my only reasons for believing that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, and that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who paid for our sins, and that Joseph Smith is God’s prophet who translated the Book of Mormon by the gift and power of God, but these evidences are sufficient for this brief outline of why I am a Mormon. The teachings of Jesus Christ help me to deal with the challenges of life.

How I live my faith

Every member of the church is given opportunities to serve. In the recent past I was the Sunday School teacher of the adult Sunday School class in my local congregation. Before that, I was the music leader in the children's "Primary." At present I am the Sunday School President, which gives me broad responsibility for helping to improve the learning and teaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ among the members and families of the local congregation. I also visit other members to see how they are doing, and to help in any way I can. I take some time every day to pray and to read the scriptures.
