Hi I'm Derrick

I believe in making a better world. I'm a missionary. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Hey I'm derrickI love my family. They are everything to me. I love sports. I love the outdoors. I love learning. Life is truly good. I've learned that the secret to life is simpler than we make it. God loves us and wants us to have joy. His teachings are the recipe for it. When we listen and obey, happiness floods in.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into a Mormon family, so the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has always existed in my life. But tradition isn't the reason for me staying in the LDS church now that I live away from home. Growing up, I just went along with my family to church each week. I learned what there was to learn and felt good about it. But I eventually got to the point where I wanted to know for myself whether or not this church I went to was THE church--the church that Christ established when he ministered on the earth. I had always found consolation in the testimony of my parents, but that didn't feel like enough anymore to answer my growing concerns and curiosity. I knew that everything I wondered about hung on the validity of the Book of Mormon. If I could find out that the Book of Mormon was true, then I would know that Joseph Smith, revelation, temple work, modern-day prophets, etc. are all true. I could then know that Christ's church had indeed been restored to the earth. I decided then that I would prayerfully read the Book of Mormon, with earnestness and diligence, cover-to-cover. During that process, and I cannot deny it, the Holy Ghost testified to me that that book was true. It happened in a way that I can hardly describe. I felt so much peace and understanding, clarity and vision as I read. What comfort I found as answers to my prayers appeared in the form of printed verses on a page. As I read the Book of Mormon, I came to know and feel the love which Heavenly Father has for me on a level that I had never before experienced. This is how I learned that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true church. And having that understanding is why I am a Mormon.

How I live my faith

The great thing about the gospel of Jesus Christ is that I am offered a very active role. As I try to model my life after the Savior's, I see ways to become better everyday. I really like that challenge of never becoming complacent. In that aspect, it boils down to the little things. Am I friendly to my neighbors? Am I slow to anger when someone is unkind? Am I setting aside time everyday to read the scriptures? There is always something to work on.
