Hi I'm John

I'm a Mormon. I grew up a Catholic and became a Mormon in 2002.

About Me

I grew up in Illinois. After high school I joined the Navy and served for 20 years. One of my last duty stations was San Diego. I retired here after working for Edison International for 20 years. I like to read - primarily historical, fiction, and science fiction. My wife and I travel often to Mexico and enjoy the country, people, and cuisine.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born and raised a Catholic. In fact, I studied to become a priest through high school. After I joined the Navy, I just stopped attending church. I never lost my faith, I just wasn't practicing it. My church became the outdoors as my sons and I were very active in Scouting after I retired from the Navy. In 2001, I felt a little lost; I wanted some fellowship. I visited many churches that scouting friends attended, but really felt at home when I walked into a chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I received the lessons from the missionaries and one thing that struck me was the Word of Wisdom. I had a heart attack and bypass surgery when I was 42 - due to smoking. And I found out that the Lord had told the prophet Joseph in 1833 that tobacco was harmful. We finally started putting warnings on cigarette packages in the 1950's. And then, through prayer, it was revealed to me by the Spirit, that this was the true church. I was baptized and have never looked back. I know that we have a living prophet and he guides us today. I know that the Book of Mormon is true. And I testify of this in the holy name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

How I live my faith

I attend my meetings on the Sabbath and try to keep it holy the way our Heavenly Father desires. I have taught Sunday school in the past and occasionally am called to substitute. Until called to the mission field, I worked in the San Diego temple. I am a home teacher but must admit I need to improve in my performance.
