Hi I'm Aimee Devine

I'm an inner-city school teacher. I have a big heart. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a high school teacher in DC. Most people are are shocked when I tell them that I prefer to teach at an inner city school. My response is simple. I'm needed. I had the opportunity to live in Brazil for 18 months and saw the poverty and problems that stemmed from poor education. I gained an understanding of the importance of a positive environment to learn and the blessings of a good education. Lives were changed and countries have been blessed when education is the focus. That is why I do what I do in the lowest performing school district in America. Teaching is not the only thing I do. I am also really into sports and photography. Filmmaking has always been a passion of mine. I love to read and listen to music. As long as I am with loved ones then I am happy.

Why I am a Mormon

I have seen miracles happen when people have been introduced to the truth of Christ's teachings. Hearts have been touched and lives have been changed. I have known from an early age that I am a child of God. I have felt that confirmation many times throughout my life. That knowledge has led me to discover more about myself and about where the Lord wants me to be. This church was restored to the earth by the Prophet Joseph Smith. The knowledge of the Christ's teachings in their entirety were lost after He and his Disciples were killed. The truth was changed or picked apart to fit the person instead of making the person fit God's commandments. Have you ever wondered why baptisms are preformed so differently in so many different churches? Or have you wondered why there are so many churches in the first place if we only have one Savior? In the Bible Paul says, One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism (Ephesians 4:5). I learned about Joseph Smith and his experience with these same questions. He was confused and after reading the Bible in James 1:5 he decided to ask God which church to join. As he knelt down in a quiet grove of trees and prayed, God the Father and his son Jesus Christ appeared to him and told him that the complete truth would be restored in one place and that Joseph's mission in life would be that of ushering in the truth once again to the earth. Years later he was presented a book that contained the records of the people that lived on the American continent during the same time the bible was being recorded. It gives an account of God's dealings with man in Ancient North and South America. He translated this ancient record through the power of God. That book is known as the Book of Mormon, which is where we got our nickname! I decided that if that book was a true record of Christ then Joseph Smith really was the prophet that God chose to provide the truth in one place. I have prayed and know it is true! I feel so blessed and all I want to do is share that truth.

How I live my faith

As a member of this church I have a responsibility to those in my community. I have participated in many service opportunities from building homes for people in Mexico to providing clean blankets or sheets to orphanages. Every service opportunity has brought me closer to my Savior and taught me how to love my neighbor as he does. I have also been able to teach the youth of this church. It is a contrast from the youth that I normally teach as an inner city high school teacher. The youth encounter so many sticky situations and decisions as Satan is fighting for their attention. I constantly see the way that Sex is pushed in media today and have first hand experiences with youth that have been deceived by these false ideas. Teens pregnancies, rape, a false sense of love and being violated through vulgar language or inappropriate touching as they walk down the halls of the high school. All these things break my heart. If I could sit the youth down and really teach them about true love and their divine nature as children of God then I guarantee that the world we live in would drastically change. I have the opportunity to do this with the youth of our church and there is no greater feeling then to see their confidence in themselves and in God increase. I feel so blessed to have the knowledge and truth in my life and to have the opportunity to share that with others. In the school setting where my speech is restricted I am able to provide a positive example for my students. This has made me live a life closer to my Lord and has provided experiences for my students to gain more confidence in themselves and their choices as well.
