Hi I'm Kalene

My faith in Jesus Christ has given me the strength to persevere through some challenging times in my life.

About Me

I grew up in Tempe, Arizona, a middle child of 8 in a loving LDS family. As a youth I was active in swimming, softball, track and just any kind of sport. I loved to paint, sew, sing and play the piano. I was married just a week before my 20th birthday, to a man 5 years older than myself. Life was blissful as he was attending dental school and I was working as a secretary at the school. I even wrote in my journal once, "life is so great for us, I wonder if we will ever have trials." A short time later I began to have stiffness in my joints and pleurisy. I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE) a debilitating autoimmune disease. After 5 years of marriage, my husband started a dental practice. Soon after we found we were expecting. After our sweet daughter was born my health took a turn for the worse. Stress became my enemy and I had plenty of it. By the time I was 30 I had been in and out of hospitals many times. There were dark times when I wondered if God had forgotten me. I even stopped praying for a time. It was then that I leaned on the faith of others. Fortunately, my family and friends from church had not given up on me. There were many visits, meals, service provided and prayers said in my behalf. After having our daughter we were not able to have anymore children, so we adopted a tiny baby boy at birth. My husband and I have now been married for 33 years and have joyfully welcomed a son-in-law and two beautiful granddaughters to our forever family.

Why I am a Mormon

Although I was born into the Mormon church, with both of my parent being strong members and was baptized at the age of 8, there comes a time that there must be a true conversion. Many times during my youth I felt the Holy Ghost testify to me that I was walking down the right path. When I was married in the Temple and began life with my husband, I realized that I was standing on my own testimony, not my parents or teachers. When trials have come my faith has been tested, but my resolve to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ has always been strengthened. Through the Gospel, my life has purpose. I know where I was before I was born, why I am here at this time on earth, and where I am going after my life here is finished. It gives me great satisfaction to know that I can be with my family for eternity. I have a knowledge that God knows me personally and cares about me and the decisions I make in my life. He hears our prayers and is mindful of our needs. Although I am far from perfect, I take take comfort in knowing that Jesus Christ atoned for our sins and that the plan of mercy will allow me to dwell one day with Him if I continue to live the principles of the gospel. Why am I a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints? Because deep in my heart I know that therein lies the fulness of the Gospel.

How I live my faith

My life has been enriched through the callings I have held throughout my life. When I was 11 years old I received my first call to serve. I was asked to be the pianist for Sunday School, which we call Primary. Through that and other subsequent callings I had in my youth I became more confident in my abilities and more sensitive of the needs of others. I have been very involved with the Young Women's program in the church having more than 20 years of serving girls ages 12 through 18. I've encouraged them to discover their talents, be aware of their individual worth and develop faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ by recognizing the warm feeling of the Holy Ghost. During the more difficult times of my life I have been sustained by my knowledge of my Heavenly Father's plan for me. I have made it a habit of studying scriptures and saying my prayers so that I can recall them when I need them. One of my favorites is founding the Old Testament; Proverbs 3:5,6 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart... Also a powerful scripture that has soothed my soul during troubling times comes from the Doctrine and Covenants, a book of scripture that was revealed to Joseph Smith the Prophet to be used in this day and age. The scripture is in D & C section 122: 7,8 - if the billowing surge conspire against thee...it shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good. The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he? Each day I try to serve others in some way. Even if it is as small as calling someone to brighten their day. I have found that when I do this, my love for my fellowman grows and I am filled with his Spirit. One of the activities I did with our Young Women's Group is a "service scavenger hunt." I made little cards that said "Sometimes it's just nice to know someone cares." We then did little acts of service for people and handed out the cards. It was a fun way of giving, if even in just a small way.
